This essay explores the relationship between concepts such as political art and art as a strategy of political action (Camnitzer, 2008), as well as power over and power to do (Holloway, 2002) in
Guatemala (1954-2011). Within this framework, this work situates the conceptualist practices in the
country, also mediated by war (1960-1996) and exile; and studies the role of Costa Rica as both
a haven for exiles and epicenter of Central American artistic relations. Guatemalan conceptualism,
and Central American conceptualism in general, is still relatively unknown given the lack of archives,
documentation and research that take this period into account. Nevertheless, conceptualist art practices stayed vibrant well into the 21st century due to the persistence of the original social conditions
and the artistic transnational networks that validate them. At least until the Guatemala elections of
2011, in, conceptualism was as much part of the political as the artistic language.

This essay analyzes the collaborative work of artists Donna Conlon and Jonathan Harker. In the
videos they produce together, these artists interpret current sociopolitical reality, both in Panama and
the globalized world, using a playful style and the traditional structure of games, which connect their
work to the concepts espoused by philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer regarding art as play. Conlon
and Harker use objets trouvées, items from everyday life, to create games through which they confront matters of profound significance, such as the destruction of the environment and of a nation’s
cultural heritage, uncontrolled real estate development, the social consequences of consumerism
and corruption, as well as the complicated construction of a supposed national identity. Together,
they have created an artistic language and an entertaining style that involve their audience in the
games and their messages, in such a way that the artwork becomes “an experience through which
the spectator is transformed.”

From a brief review about an unpublished record of dances, testimonies and writings by
the choreographer, dancer, writer Iris Scaccheri (1939-2014) we will focus on the subjectivity in her creations. We study the particularities of their dances and the relationship with
the production and artistic context, located between the 60’s and the 80’s in Argentina. Our
approach supposes rescuing a tendency of dance, forgotten nowadays. Her body represents a broken culture by the political-social situation, that’s why freedom, expression and
creativity are expressed by dancing metaphors.

The paper presented has as target the analysis of the results obtained in a didactic action developed using the film Mr. Turner (Mike Leight, 2014). In this action, students had to learn the caractheristics of the romantic painting through the film. The methodology used, still infrequent in art education, shows a very positive result in knowledge acquisition by the students in order to learn the author’s personality, his style and the art market of that moment.
