This is primarily due to the modernist legacy from the twentieth century, which is characterized by an appraisement of the architectural object over the structural and historical continuity of the city. Meanwhile, new social trends and patterns of association in the twenty-first century city call for increasingly complex and interdisciplinary approaches in order to be addressed. It is in this context that typological reasoning is proposed as the only tool capable of negotiating between different layers of information at multiple scales and simultaneously incorporating social, economic and cultural content in our material decisions. Moreover, the ability of type to generate variation over time, which does not occur with its counterpart, the model, makes it a sufficiently dynamic instrument to address the volatile reality of the contemporary city. The adopted methodology is based on a series of projects that are analyzed through different discursive lenses in order to demonstrate the diagrammatic nature of architecture and the strategic projection of alternative urban scenarios. In the end, typological reasoning, far from constituting just another linear tool for creating architecture from programmatic agendas, allows the architect to establish a decision-making field where negotiation can take place, which in turn empowers him in the process of city-building.
