La genética humana en Costa Rica situación actual y sus perspectivas

Abstract

Se analiza la situación de la genética humana en Costa Rica mediante un estudio de la literatura científica publicada entre 1964 y 1984. Se muestra que a partir de 1976 se ha incrementado el número de publicaciones en este campo, destacando las investigaciones sobre hemoglobinas anormales, la estructura genética de varias poblaciones y la caracterización de algunas enfermedades hereditarias. Se concluye que actualmente la genética humana no reúne las condiciones para ofrecer soluciones, en investigación básica y aplicada, a los problemas biomédicos que enfrenta el país. Sin embargo, se espera un desarrollo aceptable en los próximos años en esta área hasta alcanzar un nivel adecuado de competencia al menos a nivel latinoarnericano. Específicamente se preve un avance importante en citogenética, genética bioquímica, epidemiología genetica y consejo genético.

A study of the situation of human genetics in Costa Rica was carried out through an analyses of the scientific literature published during 1964 and 1984 There's an increase in the number of publications in this area since 1976, particularly in the field of abnormal hemoglobins, the genetics structure of some populations and the characterization of a few hereditary diseases. At this moment the area of Human Genetics doesn't have the necessary conditions in order to provide solutions to the biomedical problems that currently affect the country, both through basic and applied research. Nevertheless, we expect an acceptable development in this field during the next few years until an appropriate level of achievement is reached, at least within Latin America. An important improvement is predictable, particularly in the areas of citogenetics, biochemical genetics, epidemiological genetics and genetic counseling.
