The selectivity and effeciency of twelve herbicide mixtures applied to beans intercropped in a coffe orchard was studies from say through August, 1985, in Santo Domingo de Heredia, Costa Rica. The chemical treatments evaluated were: DNBP (2.0 kg/ha), linuron (0.75 kg/ha), chlorobroauron (1.45 kg/ha) and bentazon (1.0 kg/ha), each one mixed with pendimetalin (0.75 kg/ha), alachlor (1.0 kg/ha) and metolachlor (1.0 kg/ha). Also, an un weeded and weeded (25 days after planting) controls were included. The mixture of chlorbromuron with alachlor and all of those containing linuron produced severe phytotoxic syaptoms to the beans, reduced the number of plants at harvest time and showed the lowest yields. The treatments with DNBP (2.0 kg/ha) + pendimethalin (0.75 kg/ha), chlorobroauron (1.5 kg/ha) + metolachlor (1.0 kg/ha) or alachlor (1.0 kg/ha) and linuron (0.75 kg/ha) + metolachlor (1.0 kg/ha) reduced the weight of fresh broad leaf weeds by 98%, 96%, 95% and 94%, respectively, when compared to the unweeded control. The mixture based con DNBP (2.0 kg/ha), betazon (1.0 kg/ha) and chlorobromuron (1.5 kg/ha) + pendimethalin (0.75 kg/ha) or metolachlor (1.0 kg/ha) produced similar yields as the controls. The unweeded treatment was the most profitable due to the low incidence of weeds on the row of pruned coffee because of the intense herbicide application.
