Nacionalismo, frontera y excepcionalismo verde en Costa Rica
Abstract
En las últimas décadas, se ha construido un imaginario que representa a Costa Rica como un país “verde”, ejemplar en materia de gestión ambiental. Este imaginario no solo le ha dado fuerte visibilidad a nivel internacional, sino que también se constituye como un eje alrededor del cual se ha reinventado y reconfigurado el nacionalismo costarricense, de cierta manera, dando continuidad al discurso nacionalista tradicional, que representa al país en muchos aspectos “excepcional”. El artículo realiza una lectura crítica sobre los procesos de construcción del nacionalismo/excepcionalismo costarricense, sus transformaciones y continuidades, desde una perspectiva que articula geografía histórica y ecología política. Se argumenta que la idea de frontera es clave para entender la construcción nacional en Costa Rica, y que el agotamiento de la frontera de colonización agrícola, hacia mediados del siglo XX, puede ser un factor que explica el “enverdecimiento” del nacionalismo costarricense. In recent decades an imaginary has been constructed, that represents Costa Rica as a “green”
country, exemplary in environmental management. This imaginary has not only provided a
strong visibility at the international level, but also constitutes an axis around which Costa Rican
nationalism has been reinvented and reconfigured, in a certain way, continuing the traditional
nationalist discourse, which represents the country as being “exceptional” in many respects. The
article presents a critical reading of the construction processes of Costa Rican
nationalism/exceptionalism, its transformations and continuities, from a perspective that
articulates historical geography and political ecology analysis. It is argued that the idea of the
frontier is key for understanding nation building in Costa Rica, and that the depletion of the
agricultural colonization frontier, towards the middle of the 20th Century, may be a factor that
explains the “greening” of Costa Rican nationalism.
