El objetivo de este estudio fue describir los patrones de mortalidad de la sección de medicina del Hospital Calderón Guardia y compararla con la mortalidad general y la publicada en la literatura mundial. Hubo 895 fallecimientos en el periodo de estudio, 51% eran hombres y 20% eran menores de 50 años. Los principales diagnósticos de fallecimiento fueron neumonía, cardiopatía isquémica,, enfermedad cerebro vascular, shock séptico y cirrosis Objetive: To report and analyze the mortality pattern in the Department of Medicine Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia. Methods: All death certificates of the p atients who died at the different specialties of Department of Medicine between June 1st., 2001 to June 30th., 2003 were reviewed and analyzed. Results: There were 895 deaths during that period, 51% men, 20% of the patients were at or less 50 years old, most of the patients (226) died between 71 and 80 years old. The main death diagnosis were, in order, pneumonia, coronary heart disease, stroke, septic shock, cirrhosis, chronic renal failure, hematologic malignancies, chronic obstructive pulmonar y disease, AIDS, and pulmonar y embolism. The specialties with the highest mortality were: Internal Medicine (41,5%), Neumology (11,7%), Cardiology (11,3%), Neurology (11,3%) and Gastroenterology (8 % ). Conclusions: The in-hospital mortalit y of the Department o f Medicine of Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia Hospital shows a similar profile compared to the general mortality of the country, except for the trauma cases, in relation of diagnosis and age.
