relevantes del contexto espacial donde realizan sus estudios, y habitan su familia;
GENERAL SUMMARY
This research analyses the socio-environmental risk approach for the students in
the Quircot and Arturo Volio Jiménez elementary schools, both located in the
community of La Lima, district of San Nicolás, in the province of Cartago, Costa Rica.
Spefically, in the study area, floods and mud flows constantly occur in the
hydrographic basins of the rivers Arriaz, Taras and Reventado , for this reason, the
researcher intends to promote a culture of prevention with the children of fifth and
sixth grade in this institutions.
Since colonial times, government authorities have scientific records that show that
the investigated watershed has very steep topographic conditions, as well as a
dense drainage compared to its geographical morphometry, added to a high rate of
deforestation in the areas of hydric recharge, along with the presence of several
landslides. For this reason, the communities and primary schools, mentioned above,
have a high geophysical vulnerability, since the population centers are located on
the banks of the rivers. On the other hand, in the last decade, growth with a lack of
territorial planning of new housing projects, commercial infrastructure, transportation
routes and construction of other educational institutions, has multiplied the
vulnerability in this area.
The research focuses on six important flood events between the years 2007 and
2019 of the Arriaz River and the Taras River, which affected the communal
infrastructure, population, natural environment, and elementary schools in the
communities of Quircot and La Lima. This problem shows the need to propose a
didactic strategy to be applied in fifth and sixth grade students, since in the coming
years these children will be heads of household and community leaders responsible
for forming environmental culture and responding to these hydrological phenomena.
The data that support this research is based on the application of the form in 2018
to principals, Social Studies teachers, as well as fifth and sixth grade students from
the mentioned elementary schools. The results obtained indicate that there is
significant ignorance about the perception of floods in the surveyed population;
which allows us to infer that this situation is similar in the rest of the population.
Therefore, it is necessary a prompt and supportive articulation of all the actors of the
two communities so that the problem of floods is faced in a comprehensive manner.
For this reason, a strategy was designed with several didactic workshops where the
teachers who teach Social Studies lessons will be able to learn the basic
pedagogical concepts of prevention against river flooding, and then teach this
information in their classrooms with the students with the aim of reducing the impact
on the research site and neighboring communities. Finally, this research proposal
tries that the current fifth and sixth grade students, in the near future, have the
technical bases on the subject under study and also they will be able to transmit to
future generations, thus creating more proactive communities capable of avoiding,
mitigate and confront this type of river overflow.
