Between October, 2003 to February, 2004 at the Finca Venecia, located in Matina in Limón, mobility in soil and recovery of banana plant nitrogen was determined, using the direct method with 15N isotopic method. Three sources enriched with 15N: urea (U), ammonium nitrate (NA) and ammonium sulfate (SA) were evaluated, at a dosage of 424 kg N per hectare per year and “monitored” through profile at four depths: 10, 30, 60 and 90 cm of soil and four growth stages (start, F10, Fm, flowering and harvest) of banana cultivation. Forms of N available from the SA was determined in greater quantity in the soil and in lesser amounts in tissues of the plant, indicating a lower tendency to be lost or absorbed from the system than the other sources. Urea is the nitrogen source that produces the greatest accumulation of N in the fruit and positively affects the plant dry weight, compared with other nitrogen sources tested (NA and SA). The use of SA appears to have a negative effect on the growth of the mother and offspring rhizome so its use as the sole source of N fertilization is not recommended. Such situation may indicate the need to use a fertilizer where the total concentration of N, comes from a mixture of several sources.

Productivity and nutritional quality of double purpose sorghum genotypes.; Productividad y calidad nutricional de genotipos de sorgo para doble propósito.
The objective of this study was to evaluate a set of dual purpose sorghum genotypes for their grain and fodder productivity, as well as for nutritional quality of leaves and stems for livestock. From 2003 through 2005, 26, 15 and 8 genotypes were evaluated respectively, in comparison with the control variety INTA CNIA during the postrera season (August to November) in the experimental fields of the National Agricultural Research Centre (INTA CNIA), Nicaragua. Agronomic traits were measured as well as nutritional quality of leaves and stems using the Near Infrared Spectrometry method. For all agronomic and nutritional quality traits were found significant differences among genotypes, except for grain yield in 2004, and the neutral and acid detergent fiber contents in stems. The heritability of agronomic and quality traits in leaves was high (≥ 0.50), with values between 0.96 and 0.51 but lower for most of quality parameters in stems, with values between 0.47 and 0.20. The only significant positive correlation was among crude protein (MAT) and leave – stem ratio in fresh stems (H/RF). The genotypes BF 95-11/195, Sureño, SH 688, V142 and V 144, achieved the best results for grain and fodder yield and fodder quality (regarding both leaves and stems).

The objective of this work was to quantify the effect of age at first calving (AFC) on milk production in the first and second lactation of specialized diary Jersey cows. Records of 28 367 cows belonging to 545 specialized dairy herds, registered in the software VAMPP Bovino 3.0 between January 2000 and December 2010, were used. Descriptive statistics and linear mixed models were performed. The AFC average was 29.35 months (SD: 6.77), with a trend to increase during the study period. A significant effect of the AFC was observed on milk production (kg/305d) in the first two lactations (P<0.0001); in the first lactation, cows with AFC < 25.8 months or between 25.8 and 41.0 months produced -275.81 and -167.70 kg/305d (P<0.0001) than those with AFC >41 months. Cows without retained placenta (RMF) produced +450 kg/305 d (P= 0.0022) than those with RMF. On the other hand, the inbreeding coefficient and type of birth had no effect on milk production. In the second lactation, the independent variables affected the milk production similarly to first lactation; however, the age at second calving did not affect the subsequent production. This study demonstrates the linear effect of AFC on first and second lactation milk production; thus, AFC seems to have an effect not only on first lactation, but also in the productive performance of second lactation.; El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar el efecto de la edad al primer parto (EPP) sobre la producción láctea en vacas Jersey.
