Metodología de la investigación: el enfoque meta-analítico para la síntesis cuantitativa de la literatura en las ciencias del movimiento humano / Research methods: the meta-analytic approach as a tool for the synthesis of literature in the human movement
En este artículo se presenta una descripción de diferentes tipos de tamaños de efecto utilizados para resumir de manera cuantitativa el cuerpo de investigación proveniente de diversas áreas de las ciencias del movimiento humano. En total se revisaron 108 meta análisis publicados entre 1983 y 2005. En el documento se describen dos grupos o familias principales de tamaños de efecto, la familia d y la familia r. Los indicadores de la familia d se utilizan para describir el efecto de un tratamiento sobre la variable dependiente en estudios de tipo comparativos; mientras que los indicadores de la familia r se utilizan para explicar la magnitud de las relaciones entre las variables en los estudios correlacionales. Las revisiones sistemáticas cuantitativas se han convertido en una herramienta objetiva muy importante para la toma de decisiones con respecto a la continuación o no de una línea determinada de investigación, lo cual permite maximizar el tiempo y los recursos destinados para la investigación. This article describes different effect sizes used to quantitatively summarize the body of knowledge from the different areas of the human movement sciences. A total of 108 meta-analyses dating from 1983 to 2005 were reviewed. In this document are described two effect size families, the d and the r. The d-family indicators are used to describe the effect of a treatment over the dependent variable in comparative studies; whereas the r-family indicators are used to explain the magnitude of the relationship between variables in correlational research. Systematic-quantitative reviews of literature have evolved into an useful decision making tool regarding whether a follow-up on specific research areas should be done or not. This decision might allow scholars to maximize their resources and time allowed to perform their research.
