In the blood component production of San Vicente de Paul Hospital´s Blood Bank (Costa Rican Social Security Fund), the Clinical Immunology Deparment carries out screening immunoassays for syphilis, HIV, HCV, HBV, HTLV I-II and Chagas disease, with the aim of increasing the safety of the blood, reducing the probability of causing a transfusion-transmitted infection and increasing the survival of the recipients. The basic demographic characteristics (sex, age, province and canton of residence) and the results of all effective donor screening immunoassays were analyzed in a public hospital (first and only donation) from November 2017 to October 2020 at San Vicente de Paul Hospital´s Blood Bank). In that period, 5,448 donors attended (52.88% men and 47.12% women), in relation to the place of residence; There was representation from all the provinces of Costa Rica, Heredia being the one that contributed the most donations (89.39%) and in general, the age group from 30 to 45 years old represented the majority of donations (45.76%) and women from the age group of 18 to 29 years old donated more (16.94%) than men (15.51%). The total cumulative seroprevalence was 1.38% (n = 75) and specifically according to each screening immunoassay: VDRL 0.28%, HIV Ag / Ab 0.02%, anti-HCV 0.28%, HBsAg 0.07%, anti-HBc 0.50%, anti-HTLV I-II 0.17% and anti-Chagas 0.13%. A statistically significant relationship was found between the variables sex and screening immunoassays with reactive results; There was no statistically significant relationship between the variables age group and screening immunoassays with reactive results (chi-square tests). There are important opportunities for improvement for the San Vicente de Paul Hospital´s Blood Bank, such as the eventual creation of a local instrument for standardized data collection and a protocol for approaching and monitoring blood donors with some reactive result in the screening immunoassays (Quality Management System).es_ES
