This article reflects on the role of the patriarchy in the historical evolution of the concept of menopause and its importance in past and present pathologization of menstrual absence. From a gender sensitive approach, we examine the traditional definition of menopause as well as other common denominations given to this feminine process in different historical periods, reviewing Classical Antiquity and Renaissance statements, the enunciation of menopause as a disease in the 18th and 19th Centuries, the invention of Estrogen Replacement Therapy as a historic milestone in the 20th Century and the controversy that has arisen in the present century over Hormone Replacement Therapy. The main conclusions address the imperative of drawing up new frames of reference in Health Sciences to conceptualize menopause as a natural, non-stigmatizing process; so that new perspectives about care for middle-aged women who face menstrual cessation can emerge and be strengthened. The article also highlights the need for debating from a Psychological viewpoint the ideological discourses that have historically justified domination, oppression, marginalization, control and other expressions of symbolic violence against nonmenstruating women.es_ES
