Objective: to evaluate the relationship between sprout production in pitaya (Hylocereus sp.) and climate variables. Materials and methods: the trial was conducted in San Mateo, Alajuela, Costa Rica, from February 2017 to December 2019. Tested variables were: number of vegetative sprouts (NVS), number of reproductive sprouts (NRS), rainfall (R, in mm), relative humidity (RH, in %), average temperature (Ta, in ° C), maximum temperature (Tmax, in ° C), and minimum temperature (Tmin, in °C). Spearman correlations were calculated among all variables. Results: NVS did not show significant correlations with NRS, R, RH, Ta, Tmax and Tmin. NRS presented a significant positive correlation with Tmin (rs = 0.54 **) and R (rs = 0.38 *): the higher the R and the Tmin, the greater the number of reproductive sprouts. NVS and NRS also showed significant correlations with climate variables in months prior to sprouting. The production peaks of vegetative sprouts occurred in July and September 2017; in March and November 2018; and in January, April, May, September, November and December 2019; while in the case of reproductive sprouts, they occurred in April, June and July 2018; and April, May, July and September 2019. Conclusions: The beginning of flowering occurs from the beginning of the rainy season, and when the Tmin increases and exceeds 20 °C. The production of reproductive sprouts occurred only in the early and middle stages of the rainy season. At the time of production of reproductive sprouts, the production of vegetative sprouts was low or null. The greater the production of vegetative sprouts, the greater the number of reproductive sprouts issued 3-5 months later. From 24 months after planting, there were between three and four flowering cycles per year.
