Se usó maíz de diferente porte por ensayo de asociación (Tico V-1 de porte bajo; y Tico H-4 de porte alto) y siete cultivares de frijol voluble en los tres experimentos. Los rendimientos de frijol asociado al maíz se redujeron en forma diferencial por cultivar de maíz desde un 15% hasta un 70%. Los maíces que se utilizaron no disminuyeron sus rendimientos por efecto de la asociación con el frijol, a exepción del efecto negativo que produjo el frijol P-16 en el maíz Tico H-4 y el P-523 y P-732 en el maíz Tico V-1. El frijol Alajuela 1 incrementó la producción del Tico H-4, como también lo introdujo el frijol México 29-N en el Tico V-1. Los cultivares de frijol México 29-N y California Small Wonder, fueron los más producctivos en asociación y monocultivo.At the Fabio Baudrit Experiment Satation, Costa Rica, three experiments were set up: two with simultaneus corn-bean association and one with single-crop beans on bambo-wire supports. Corn cultivars of different size were used in both association experiments (Tico V-1, short, and Tico H-4, tall), while seven climbing bean cultivars were compared in all three experiments. The yield of corn-associated beans were reduced in a differential manner according to corn cultivar, from 15 up to 70%. The corn cultivars used showed no yield reductions as a result of their association with bean, except for the negative effect produced by bean cv. P-16 upon corn cv. Tico H-4, as well as that of cvs. P523 and P-732 upon corn cv. Tico V-1. Bean cv. Alajuela 1 increased yield of Tico H-4, and so did bean cv. México 29-N with Tico V-1 yield.
