This paper presents the findings of a prospective study of the infectious morbidity
of a cohort of 114 rural infants throughout their first year of life. Results
indicate that upper respiratory infections were the most frecuently found illnesses
and were more prevalent between 9 and 11 months, followed by diarrheal disease
which was common in infants 6 to 8 months of age. The comparison of these
results with those of other studies indicate a low rate of infectious diseases among
Puriscal children, and also revealed the importance of weekly surveillance to determine
morbidity in a reliable manner.
dado.
