Abstract

During investigation of the epidemiology of human rotavirus infection in Costa Rica, the anti-human rotavirus capacity of colostrum was studied. We were looking for an explanation for the relatively low incidence of acute diarrhoeal disease among exclusively breast-fed infants. Colostrum was obtained, 1-76 h post partum, from thirty-three women aged 16-27 y from San José, the capital of Costa Rica, a city of about half a million inhabitants.
