“Una comedia de la muerte”: Copi y sus profanaciones del sida

Abstract

En 1988, se estrena en París Une visite inopportune [Una visita inoportuna], acaso la obra más autorreferencial del escritor, performer e historietista argentino radicado en Francia, Copi, quien en 1984 es diagnosticado VIH positivo. La obra se desarrolla enteramente en una sala de hospital donde se concitan los actores de una escena prototípica del avance fatal de la enfermedad hacia mediados de la década de 1980: el enfermo, la enfermera, el médico, las amistades, pero también un periodista –en representación, quizás, del rol de los medios en la crisis del sida– y la muerte como visitante inoportuna. Retomando los planteamientos de Douglas Crimp sobre la importancia de dis-putar políticamente los sentidos asociados al sida, este ensayo se propone explorar la intervención de una obra absurda, humorística y alucinada sobre el conjunto de afectos y representaciones que primaban en relación a la enfermedad a nivel global y, más específicamente, en su contexto francés más inmediato. El concepto de profanación, tal como lo entiende el filósofo italiano Giorgio Agam-ben, nos sirve para capturar el modo en que Copi recupera un tema que, para entonces, había sido –y continuaba siendo– fuertemente dominado por los discursos autorizados de la medicina, la religión y los medios de comunicación masivos.

1988 is the year of the premiere of the play Une visite inopportune [An Untimely Visit], perhaps the most autobiographical piece by the Paris-based Argentine writer, performer, and cartoonist Copi, diagnosed HIV positive in 1984. The play takes place entirely in a hospital room, which brings to-gether the different actors involved in a prototypical scene of the fatal advance of the disease in the mid-eighties: the patient, the nurse, the doctor, friends, but also a journalist –who might incarnate the role played by the media in the AIDS crisis– and death as an untimely visitor. Drawing from Dou-glas Crimp’s ideas on the importance of politically contesting the meanings associated with AIDS, this essay aims to explore the intervention of an absurd, humorous, and hallucinated work amidst the affects and representations that prevailed at that time in relation to the disease, both at a global scale and, more specifically, in its more immediate French context. The concept of profanation, as it is understood by the Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben, allows us to capture the way in which Copi recovers a subject that, by then, had been –and continued to be– strongly dominated by the authoritative discourses of medicine, religion and the mass media.
