Abstract
Introduction: premature babies with very low birth weight have multiple medical conditions that compromise their lives and require care in neonatal units. Many investigations indicate that these children have a high incidence of enamel defects in primary teeth due in part, to changes in calcium metabolism, parenteral nutrition, and maneuvers that are performed when performing an endotracheal intubation. Case report: in this article, 3 cases of children born before 32 weeks gestation, which were treated in the neonatal unit of the Hospital Nacional de Niños in Costa Rica and enamel defects in their upper incisor teeth are presented; one of the children had caries in the teeth affected therefore were restored with composite resin, the other children were not given any restorative procedures. Conclusions: there is a correlation between children born prematurely and temporary dentition enamel hypoplasias, but further studies are needed to establish cause-effect relationships between enamel alterations and permanent dentition as well as various related prenatal factors of the pregnant mother.
