Abstract
El presente estudio se llevó a cabo durante el año 2002 con el objetivo de determinar la factibilidad técnica y financiera de esta actividad en la Región Atlántica de Costa Rica. Se presenta esta alternativa como una posible forma de contribuir a la solución del panorama socioeconómico crítico de desempleo y pobreza, el cual ha venido empeorando debido a la cada de precios de los principales productos de la región y las políticas proteccionistas de la comunidad económica europea y de EE.UU. Se analizaron los diferentes componentes estratégicos que podran influir en el éxito de un futuro proyecto, tales como el entorno internacional de la palma aceitera en relación con la oferta, la demanda y la variación de los precios. También, a nivel nacional, el estudio se enfocó la importancia económica, así como su posicionamiento en el mercado, la comercialización, los mercados meta, las oportunidades de mercado derivadas de tratados de libre comercio y los sistemas de preferencia arancelaria. Adicionalmente, se desarrolló el componente agrícola del cultivo, el componente industrial, los aspectos ambientales, las áreas potenciales para el cultivo en la región, así como un análisis FODA (SWAT en inglés), complementado con un estudio financiero.
The study was conducted during the year 2002 in order to determine the technical and financing feasibility of this activity in the Atlantic Region of Costa Rica. It is presented as an alternative to contribute in solving the critical socio-economic panorama of unemployment and poverty, which has worsen due to the price fall of the local products and by the protecting policies of the European Economic Community and the United States of America. The different strategic components that could influence the success of the future projects was analyzed , such as the international surroundings of the oil palm in relation to the offer, the demand and the price variation. Also, on the national level, the study focused on its economic importance, as well as its positioning in the market, its marketing, the target markets, the market opportunities derived from the free trade treaties and the tariff preference systems. Besides, the agricultural component of the crop, the industrial component, the environmental aspects and the potential areas in the region for the crop were developed; as well as a SWAT analysis, complemented by a financial study.
