As established in Article 5 of Law No. 8114 on Tax Simplification and Efficiency, "to guarantee the maximum efficiency of public investment in reconstruction and optimum conservation of the Costa Rican road network ...", the University of Costa Rica, Through the National Laboratory of Materials and Structural Models (hereinafter, LanammeUCR), it must carry out an annual evaluation of the projects under concession. In accordance with the above, this is a technical report that is part of the evaluation functions that the aforementioned law confers on the LanammeUCR. This report has the purpose of evaluating the hydrothermal conditions reflected in a superficial way in sections of National Route 27 San José-Caldera and its implications, from a civil engineering point of view. Five zones were identified where there is superficial evidence of hydrothermal alteration, which can be seen mainly in the reddish and yellowish colorations in the cut slopes and other infrastructure works, such as ditches, intercepting ditch and thrown concrete. This coloration is mainly due to the formation of hydrated sulfates, oxides and hydroxides of iron, sulfuric acid and elemental sulfur, product of the different oxidation processes of pyrite and its results. It is also evident in these areas the disintegration and collapse of the released concrete, as well as corrosion of the reinforcing steel used as reinforcement of the cast concrete or in the meshes for fallen, result of the interaction of these elements with the acid waters of the hydrothermal.
