Abstract
Description
The purpose of this study was to identify general risk factors associated with nutritional status and the oral health of elderly people (PAM) attending day-care centers in the area of Tibás and Goicoechea during the second half of 2009. The population consisted of 76 older adults, to whom was administered an instrument called MNA to determine the risk of malnutrition, and who underwent a clinical dental examination to assess the state of dental health in order to establish the weight of oral-dental conditions in the nutritional risk of the persons attending day centers. In addition, the PAM participants answered a questionnaire through a personal interview to determine demographic and socioeconomic factors associated with nutritional risk and the bucco-dental status. The results revealed that over half of the group studied has a satisfactory nutritional status and 43.4% are at risk of malnutrition. The population presented a very poor oral-dental condition, characterized by high levels of edentulism and poor condition of the dentures. The presence of root cavities and periodontal disease were not relevant characteristics in this population. Findings suggest that the chance of being at risk of malnutrition increases with poor bucco-dental condition, with age and whether the PAM is female and has no partner.
