The general uses of the vegetables mulches, as well as their advantages and limitations are indicated. Important information on the use of vegetal live mulches, including legumes and some species considered as invaders in banana and coffee plantations, are introduced and analyzed. In coffee, a list of mulches that could be utilized as live mulches is included . Several results indicate that the effectiveness of the weed control and the interactions with nematodes and the coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei) relay on the species of the mulch used. In order to reduce the negative effects for competition and not to favor the berry borer, it has been recommended to maintain the mulches between the rows, leaving a clean area under the coffee plants. The available information in banana plantations is less abundant and consistent. However, there are positive experiences with de Mouse’s Ear (Geophila repens) and more recently with several native species in some banana plantations. The experience with Arachis pintoi has not been fully satisfactory. The need is pointed out to conduct detailed studies on the species and interactions with other components of the agro-ecosystem, as well as to quantify other benefits of the mulches in order to make them more attractive from the economic point of view.en_US
