Abstract
Records of strong-motion accelerations produced by the seismic swarm in the Puriscal zone in the south-west end of the Valle Central, Costa Rica are shown. The records were obtained by the strong-Motion Instrumentation Program of the Earthquake Engineering Laboratory of the University of Costa Rica in the town of Santiago de Puriscal between May 31 and June 30, 1990. Significant earthquakes are characterized by the peak acceleration, duration, characteristic frequency and effective peak acceleration. Observations of damage to masonry houses and material quality tests performed in some of those houses are resumed. The most important factors in defining the magnitude of observed damage are analyzed from an overall point of view.
