Abstract
This article seeks to explain the legitimacy of religious discourses and practices related to male dominance, compulsory heterosexuality, and marriage/family, which are promoted by the Catholic Church in the current discussions on education and sexual health. To achieve that, this article discusses two key events in Costa Rican history: the construction of the national identity (late nineteenth century) and the development of the labor movements (first half of the twentieth century). Finally, this article summarizes discussions held during the period of 1999-2009 related to sexual and reproductive health in which religious discourses are at play. The review of pertinent literature and national newspaper articles, as well as in depth interviews with key actors, provided the information for the development of this article.
