Abstract

Forty-nine patients (20 men and 29 women) were investigated for Helicobacter pylori tinfection. All patients had dyspeptic problems and underwent gastroscopy at the Max Per- Alta Hospital, Cartago. They were examibed by histology (Warthin-Starry and Gimenez stains) and cultivation as a reference method. Helicobacter pylori strains could be isolated from 71.4% of the patients. Altogether, 69.4% pattentes were shown to be infected using a combination of both stains; the Warthin-Stally stain showed 97% sensitivity and 85.7°16 of specificity and the Gimenez technique, 97.7% and 78.6% respectively. The results confirm that both stains are sen-sitive methods for the detection of H. pylori in gastric biopsies.
