Abstract
The development of runners, and the effect of prunning the flowers of five strawberry cultivars was evaluated at the Fabio Baudrit Experimental Station in Barrio San José and Fraijanes, Alajuela from June to Octubre 1984. The evaluated cultivars were Tioga, Aliso, Chandler, Douglas and Brighton and the flowers were prunned either before vegetative bud initiation or continuously during all the experiment. A control treatment with no flower pruning was also stablished. There were significant differences on both localites, but the yield of runner plants in Barrio San José higher, mainly with Chandler. In Fraijanes, Douglas was the highest yielding cultivar. Prunning the flowers before vegetative bud initation, as well as continously, increased the number of runners and daugther plants, but no differences were found among those two treatments, probably because the mother plants showed only one or two blossoms. The exception was Brighton; in spite of its continuous blooming it did could have a cash return from fruit, if he only prunes the flower until the initiation of runners. A smaller number of certified mother plants are needed to obtain in enough runners if they are stablished in Barrio San José.
