This paper examines three different years when Costa Rica celebrated its independence: 1921, 1971, 2021. Its objective is not going deeper into those commemorations, but using them to discuss about conceptions of past, present, and future that appeared during those celebrations. The paper asserts that there are many differences among the ways the Independence Day was commemorated during those years which is explained by changes in social integration, inequalities, cultural confrontations, and visions about Costa Rica as a nation. Finally, it argues that nowadays Costa Rica is a country very different from that of 1971 and 1921, which implies that the future of this nation cannot be considered for granted.
