Abstract
As a result of seven years of research in the Tamtoc site, located at the Huastec Region, northeastern Mexico, archaeological data indicate a continuous occupation of the site since the Middle Preclassic to the Early Postdassic. Here are presented a number of diagnostic features ofthehuastec architecture and a brief description of the prehispanic settlement. A remarkable discovery in Tamtoc was the Monument 32 related to a hydraulic system, associated to a ritual context dated between 900 and 650 B.C. Tlie data open new topics and induce to reconsider the role and position of the huastec archaeological culture in regard to the rest of Mesoamerica and, mainly, with the predassic traditions of the Gulf of Mexico floodplains.
