Abstract
Bird watching is one of the fastest growing ecotourism activities in Costa Rica. Using mixed criteria approaches, a local birdwatching circuit is presented in the Río Navarro – Río Sombrero Protected Zone, visualizing the richness of the birdlife based on the unit’s tourism system. An inventory of applied ecotourism and birdlife resources of tourist interest was applied with the use of citizen science tools, based on life zones and bird richness. 272 species of birds and nine key public and private sites were identified for the development of bird-based tourism activities. In this analysis, the altitudinal gradient with five life zones and regional endemism with 49 bird species stand out as valuable elements to enhance bird watching activity in a comprehensive manner. A bird guide is presented with 104 species of ecotourism value and a description of nine sites of interest in the circuit to promote local tourism management and encourage visits by domestic and international birdwatchers. This pilot exercise generated a birding route linking the local bird oriented offer of services in the protected zone and is replicable and can be implemented in other geographic spaces.
