Resumen
Se analizó la situación actual del mercado nacional de frutas en Costa Rica, así como del mercado internacional, principalmente Europa y Norteamérica. Se identificaron las tendencias del mercado, oportunidades, ventajas comparativas, barreras Arancelarias y no arancelarias, y dificultades que afronta la producción de frutas tropicales en el país. Se concluyó que el país podría tener ventajas comparativas para la producción de frutas tropicales, tanto como fruta fresca (mango, papaya, aguacate, zapote, chicozapote, carambola, rambután, pitahaya, mangostán, anona, atemoya, durián, naranjilla, litchi, jocote y papaya) como procesada (naranjilla, banano, cítricos, guayaba, mango, maracuyá, papaya y piña).
The current situation of the local fruit market in Costa Rica and the international market, mainly Europe and North America, are analysed. Market trends, opportunities, comparative advantages, tariff and non-tariff barriers and constrains faced by the tropical fruit production in the country were identified. It was concluded that the country may have comparative advantages for production of tropical fruits as fresh produce (mango, papaya avocado, mamey sapote, sapodilla, starfruit, rambutan, strawberry pear, mangostan, cherimoya, atemoya, durian, naranjilla, litchi, red mombin) or processed (naranjilla, banana, citrus, guava, mango, passion fruit, papaya and pineapple).
