Abstract
A biomedical study, which included biodemographic and genetic aspects was carried out in two Guaymi localities, Limoncito and Abrojo, in Southern Costa Rica. Both populations present typical spatial dispersal patterns indicating a successful adaptation to the environment. The two groups are in a highly prolific phase and have a large number of offspring in complete families (8,9 ± 3,0 in Limoncito and 6,9 ± 2,6 in Abrojo). Fifty percent of the prople are between 0-15 years old and the sexual ratio shows a higher proportion of females. There is a high immigration rate from various places in Panama. Emigration is very low. Endogamic matings are predominant and there is a high percentage of poligyny. In a total of 25 enzimatic loci, 17 were monomorphic and 8 were polymorphic, Including two "private" polyrmorphisms, LDHB-GUA-1 and ACP-B-GUA-1, both showing deficiencies in enzimatic activities. Biomedical and taxonomic implications of these findings are discussed.
