Variación estacional del viento en Costa Rica y su relación con los regímenes de lluvia

Abstract

The monthly wind distributions of 22 stations located in different regions of Costa Rica are analyzed. It is found that these distributions respond to the wind behavior at the synoptic scale and its interaction with topography. The stations which show the greater wind speeds are identified, as well as the range of variation of the wind speed and the predominant wind direction through the year. This analysis indicates that the stations located at barlovent, with respect to wind direction, have lower speeds than the ones located at sotavent. The station La Tejona, located near Arenal reservoir, shows the maximum values, reaching a speed of 37.1 km/h in February. The stations located in the Central Valley also show relatively high wind speeds. In the majority of the analyzed stations, the predominant wind direction corresponds to the Trade winds. The influence of the sea breeze (mesoscale wind) and the equatorial westerlies (synoptic scale wind) is observed at the stations of Puntarenas, Damas, Pindeco and Palmar Sur. The rainfall distributions at the same 22 stations, used for the wind distributions, are also analyzed with the purpose to establish if exist any relationship among these variables. The results show differences between the Pacific Watershed and the Caribbean Watershed. The majority of the analyzed stations in the Pacific Watershed show an opposite behavior between wind and rainfall. This clearly establish the influence of the Trade winds intensity in the production of rainfall and identify, in this region, a dry season and a rainy season. This behavior is not observed in the Caribbean Watershed

Se estudia la distribución mensual del viento en 22 estaciones ubicadas en diferentes regiones del país. Se encuentra que esta distribución responde al comportamiento del viento en la escala sinóptica y a su interacción con la orografía. Se identifican las estaciones que presentan mayor velocidad del viento, así como el rango de variación de la rapidez y la dirección predominante a través del año. Este análisis lleva a establecer que las estaciones ubicadas a barlovento, con respecto a la dirección del viento, reportan velocidades menores que las ubicadas a sotavento. La estación La Tejona, ubicada cerca del embalse de Arenal, presenta los valores máximos, alcanzando una velocidad de 37.1 km/h en el mes de febrero. Las estaciones ubicadas en el Valle Central también muestran magnitudes del viento relativamente altas. La dirección predominante del viento, en la mayoría de las estaciones analizadas corresponde al viento Alisio, sistema de viento de escala sinóptica. En las estaciones Puntarenas, Damas, Pindeco y Palmar Sur, se observa la influencia de la brisa de mar, (viento de mesoescala) y de los oestes ecuatoriales (vientos de escala sinóptica). También, se analiza la distribución mensual de la lluvia en las mismas 22 estaciones seleccionadas para estudiar la distribución mensual de la velocidad del viento, con el propósito de establecer si existe alguna relación entre esas variables. Los resultados muestran diferencias entre la Vertiente del Pacífico y la Vertiente del Caribe. La mayoría de las estaciones analizadas en la Vertiente del Pacífico muestran un comportamiento opuesto entre el viento y la lluvia, estableciendo claramente la influencia de la velocidad del viento Alisio en la producción de la lluvia e identificando en esta región, una época seca y otra lluviosa. En la Vertiente del Caribe, no se aprecia este comportamiento.
