Factores asociados con la elección de la especialidad en medicina legal en estudiantes costarricenses

Introducción: La toma de decisiones para la elección de una especialidad médica es un proceso dinámico,
complejo y en constante evolución, que debe satisfacer las necesidades existentes en un país.
Objetivo: Identificar qué factores influyen para que los estudiantes de la carrera de medicina y cirugía de la Universidad de Costa Rica consideren la especialidad de medicina legal como una opción de especialización.
Método: Estudio exploratorio que utilizó un cuestionario aplicado de forma voluntaria y anónima a estudiantes y categorizó, por medio de escala Likert, la importancia de influencia de factores personales, relacionados con la carrera/escuela/universidad y de egreso. Se realizó análisis descriptivo de los resultados clasificándolos por tipo de factor.
Resultados: El porcentaje más alto en importancia en elección se obtuvo en el rubro de factores personales, en cuanto a vocación, preferencia o gustos por la especialidad y sus características (71.8%). En el tipo de factores de egreso, la posibilidad que brinda la especialidad de obtener trabajo rápido al terminarla, así como de hacer residencia, fueron calificadas respectivamente con 64.1% y 61.5% como factores muy importantes en su elección. En el tipo de factores relacionados con la carrera/escuela/
universidad se citaron como muy importantes en la elección: la calidad de las prácticas (56.4%) y la influencia de buenas clases y bien preparadas en el curso vinculado a la especialidad (53.8%).
Discusión: Los factores relacionados a la carrera/escuela/universidad constituyen fortalezas para tomar en cuenta en posibles estrategias universitarias, para mejorar la percepción de la especialidad e influir en factores personales particulares de los estudiantes y en los factores relacionados con el egreso de la carrera. Los programas universitarios de educación médica continua adquieren relevancia.
Conclusiones: Existen factores universitarios que hacen que los estudiantes de la carrera de medicina y cirugía consideren especializarse en medicina legal y que es necesario fortalecer.
Introduction: Decision making for the choice of a medical specialty is a dynamic, complex and constantly evolving process that must satisfy the existing needs in a country. Objective: to identify factors that influence medicine and surgery students at the University of Costa Rica to consider the specialty of forensic medicine as a specialization option. Method: Exploratory study, which used a questionnaire applied voluntarily and anonymously to students, which categorized through the Likert scale the importance of influence of personal factors, related to the career/school/university and to graduation. A descriptive analysis of the results was carried out, classifying them by type of factor. Results: The highest percentage in importance in choice was obtained in the category of personal factors, in terms of vocation, preference or liking for the specialty and its characteristics (71.8%). In the type of graduation fac tors, the possibility offered by the specialty of obtaining a quick job upon completion and the possibility of doing residency, were qualified respectively with 64.1% and 61.5% as very important factors in their choice. In the type of factors related to the career/school/university, were cited as very important in the choice: the quality of the medical practices (56.4%) and the influence of good and well-prepared classes in the course linked to the specialty (53.8%).
