An assay was conducted, between the months of October - 1987, in order to evaluate the efficacy and selectivity of eleven herbicide treatments in a mango nursery (Jamaica cv.) in the province of Alajuela, Costa Rica. The treatments applied were: a) in pre-emergence: granulated oxyfluorfen (0.5 kg/ha), metolachlor (2.0 kg/ha), alachlor (2.0 kg/ha), liquid oxyfluorfen (0.5 kg/ha), oxadiazon (0.75 kg/ha), terbutryn + liquid oxyfluorfen (1+0.25 kg/ha), and AC 263-499 (0.2 kg/ha) and bentazon (1.0 kg/ha) and b) in postemergence: fluazifop-butyl (0.25 kg/ha) and bentazon (1.0 Kg/ha). A free weed-growth and weeded controls were included. The prevaling broad-Leaf weeds were Portulaca oleracea, Richardia scabra, Trifolium repens and Euphorbia hirta. Some of the gramineous weeds were Eleusine indica, Sporobolus indicus and Echinocloa colona. An adequate control was obtained, in the plots with mixed-weed populations, where the treatments based on liquid oxifluorfen, terbutryn, granulated oxifluorfen, oxadiazon, terbutylazine, alachlor and metolachlor were applied.
