Expansión del consumo doméstico de bienes industriales en Costa Rica entre 1953-1984

Abstract

Este artículo analiza la expansión del consumo doméstico de los siguientes bienes industriales: electrodomésticos, alimentos procesados, y vestimenta manufacturada, durante el periodo 1953-1984. El estudio del consumo de electrodomésticos se realiza dentro y fuera del área metropolitana, mientras que el del consumo de alimentos procesados y vestimenta manufacturada por el tipo de fuentes, se limita solo al área metropolitana de San José. La investigación muestra cómo la difusión de los bienes industriales analizados implicó la transformación de patrones de consumo de las familias costarricenses a partir de la segundad mitad del siglo XX, a través del análisis de datos censales correspondientes a los años de 1953, 1963 y 1984 que fueron procesados en cuadros de tenencia de electrodomésticos, y del análisis de los cambios registrados en las Canastas de Consumo Básico Alimentario contenidas en la Encuesta de Ingresos y Gastos de las Familias de la Ciudad de San José de 1949, Encuesta de Ingresos y Gastos Familiares del área metropolitana de San José de 1961 y en la Encuesta de Ingresos y Gastos de los Hogares del área metropolitana de San José de 1987. Además, el análisis incluye imágenes publicitarias con el objetivo de ilustrar la oferta de los bienes industriales mencionados y también para respaldar los hallazgos derivados del análisis de los datos obtenidos de las fuentes censales y de las canastas de consumo básico.

This article analyzes the diffusion of domestic consumption of the following industrial goods: household appliances, processed food, and manufactured clothing during the period 1953-1984. The consumption of household appliances is studied inside and outside the metropolitan area while the consumption of processed food and manufactured clothing due to the type of sources, is limited to the metropolitan area of the country. The research shows how the diffusion of these goods implied the transformation of consumption patterns of Costa Rican families from the second half of the twentieth century, through the analysis of census data corresponding to the years 1953, 1963 and 1984 that were processed in tables of household appliance ownership, and the analysis of the changes registered in the Basic Food Consumption Lists contained in the Metropolitan Household Income and Expenditure Surveys for the years 1949, 1961 and 1987. In addition, the analysis includes advertising images in order to illustrate the offer of the industrial goods mentioned above and also to support the findings derived from the analysis of the data obtained from the census sources and the basic consumption lists.
