This study was carried out with the purpose of promoting optimism as a protective factor in a group of older adult men who are imprisoned at Centro de Atención Institucional Adulto Mayor de San Rafael de Alajuela, Costa Rica. The research arises as a response to the need for a comprehensive intervention with this vulnerable population, in whom the conditions of deprivation of liberty exacerbate the difficulties associated with the aging process. The qualitative approach and the phenomenological method made it possible to explore in detail the subjective experiences of the participants, showing that optimism is fundamental not only for their integral wellbeing, but also to strengthen their capacity to recover from the difficulties of the prison environment. With the SWOT technique and data analysis by triangulation, it was possible to identify the main gerontological needs, which are usually of importance in the prison context. The implementation of the project “ₐBCₒₚₜᵢₘᵢₛₜₐ” provided participants with concrete tools to foster a more optimistic attitude towards their life situation, resulting in a marked improvement in their overall well-being. The study highlights the importance of developing gerontological interventions tailored to the specific conditions of older adults who are serving a sentence in prison and proposes a replicable model for future programs aimed at improving the quality of life of this population. The findings highlight the importance of approaches that comprehensively address human development of imprisoned older adults, contributing to a healthier and more dignified aging. This study not only expands knowledge in the field of Gerontology, but also provides a foundation for the development of effective interventions in similar prison settings.
