Abstract
A research in the area of Women's Studies is presented, which examined the social representations (SR) on gender of the teaching staff of the School of Social Work at the University of Costa Rica and their influence on the training processes they develop. Methodologically, it is a qualitative research that used content analysis and semi-structured interviews as main techniques. Ten interviews were conducted in total, four of them to teaching staff who are experts in Gender and six to teaching staff who are not experts in that category. It should be noted that the entire population interviewed is part of the School of Social Work of the University of Costa Rica at its Rodrigo Facio Headquarters. The theoretical framework of the study was based on the categories of social representations and gender, both were analyzed from the theoretical contributions provided by Women's Studies. The research considers social representations as: a series of ideas, beliefs and elaborations that, when interpreted, are structured as a framework toreadand to understand social relations and the reality that surrounds them. In this research, gender will be understood as the social, ideological, cultural, economic and political construction that attributes a series of symbolic values, roles and expressions to bodies that are biologically interpreted as men or women, this cataloging will define the quotas of validity, power and participation of these bodies in all private and social relationships. The category of Women's Studies was fundamental for the research, since it allowed a well-founded reading of social representations in gender matters, allowing them to be problematized from their different theoretical contributions, and thus provided an analysis that recovers the processes of invisibility, violence and discrimination that are built from an androcentric vision of social relations, where women and the feminine are assumed as inferior. The research showed the relevance of social representations of teaching staff in terms of gender , in the way they decide whether to incorporate the category of gender into professional training. Their life experiences, as well as their processes of construction and deconstruction of those social representations are reflected in the methodological strategies they use, as well as in the evaluations of the contents developed in the training processes they lead.
