The control of the weeds Echinochloa colonum and Rottboellia exaltata was studied at two localities, Hacienda La Conchita and Hacienda Mojica, in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, during the period from September to December, 1997. The following treatments were applied by plane, over 7 ha of rice (Setesa 9 and CR-5272 cultivars) for each locality, respectively; during the stage of the primordium emergence, on doses of commercial product (cp): 1- Furore (fenoxaprop-p) 1 l/ha, 2- Facet (quinchlorac) 1.5 l/ha in mixture with Propanil 5 l/ha (applied only in one locality) and 3- Clincher (cyhalofop) 2.5 l/ha. Clincher was selective to the CR-5272 rice cultivar, even under flooded conditions and Furore was phytotoxic and reduced the yield between 17 and 18%; eventhough both controlled weeds between 90 and 100%. No treatment effect was observed on the rice seed from the treated areas.
