Abstract
The potential of producing papaya plants from unpollinated ovules and ovaries was determined. The variables studied were flower bud size and levels of 2,4-D (1 to 5 mg/l), NAA (0.1 to 2 mg/l), CPPU (0.1 mg/l), kinetin (0.1 mg/l) and sucrose (3 to 10%). The explants were initially cultivated in complete darkness. Only the ovaries with NAA (0.5 and 1 mg/l) produced embryos. The production of plantlets was obtained after their transfer to an auxin-free medium. The possible effects of the treatments are discussed.
